Microservices Decomposition & Gateway Routing
Decomposing a monolithic e-commerce application into decoupled domain services orchestrated via Traefik and RabbitMQ.
01 — Technical Challenge
A growing commerce platform experienced tight coupling between ordering, catalog, and payment logic. Synchronous execution led to cascading failures when dependent services lagged, making isolated updates risky.
02 — Architecture Design
- Separated business domains into independent services: auth, catalog, order, payment, and supplier portals.
- Implemented Traefik as the single entry API Gateway to route frontend requests without exposing internal service topology.
- Introduced RabbitMQ event broker for asynchronous inter-service coordination.
03 — Key Engineering Decisions
- Replaced synchronous cross-service DB calls with asynchronous event messaging (e.g. order-service consumes payment.succeeded events).
- Maintained logical schema boundaries per service to prepare for physical database decoupling.
- Configured dynamic Traefik path rules to eliminate CORS and cross-origin complexity for client apps.
04 — Implementation Details
Services were packaged in Docker containers and wired to a shared messaging network. Asynchronous consumers handle state transitions independently, ensuring that order processing continues even during temporary downstream hiccups.
05 — Verified Technical Outcomes
- Decoupled service deployments allowing domain logic to be modified without impacting unrelated modules.
- Eliminated synchronous payment blocking through resilient asynchronous queue workers.
- Standardized API ingress across mobile and web interfaces.
